Indianapolis Suburb Dealing with US 31 Closure

CARMEL, Ind. (AP): Businesses and residents in the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel are weathering the first full day of an expected eight-month closure of U.S. 31.

The main link between Indianapolis and South Bend was closed to traffic Friday in the north Indianapolis suburb for a project to upgrade the highway to interstate standards.

Traffic delays due to the closure were minimal Saturday, but some gridlock on local roads used for detours is expected starting with Monday's rush hour.

The highway construction could affect local business owners who had little time to prepare after the closure was announced Feb. 25.

But several local roads leading to stores and other businesses remain open.
