Indianapolis Street Repair Plan Left in Limbo

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Plans for spending possible hundreds of millions of dollars on rebuilding pothole-strewn streets in Indianapolis have become caught in a political tussle over where the money will come from.

Republican Mayor Greg Ballard has proposed spending $350 million on road repaving, new sidewalks and repairs to bridges, swimming pools and parks. Democrats who control the City-County Council have blocked the plan, saying they don't want the city to make about $90 million in interest payments over 30 years.

Republican Councilwoman Janice McHenry tells The Indianapolis Star that the dispute is hurting all the city's elected officials because residents don't know why repairs aren't being made.

Resident Michelle Cloud says she used to drive hundreds of miles in Costa Rica and thinks the Indianapolis streets are becoming just as bad.
