INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indianapolis police are attempting to combat crime with a new approach focusing on individual neighborhoods within six high-crime areas.

The effort aims to utilize all of the city's resources to address the causes of crime. WTHR-TV (http://bit.ly/1xyNGc4 ) reports officials hope the move reduces crime in areas like the east side neighborhood, where crime is a big problem.

The city's public safety director says 27 percent of homicides occur where less than 5 percent of the population lives.

The new initiative seeks to improve housing by fast-tracking complaints made to agencies such as code enforcement or health and hospitals.

Public safety officials say more mental health resources and rehabilitation opportunities for inmates are also needed to reduce crime.
