Indianapolis Man Sentenced for Attempted Murder

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A man who pleaded guilty to attempted murder for shooting his then 17-year-old former girlfriend in the parking lot of an Indianapolis high school will spend 22 years in prison.

The Indianapolis Star reports 20-year-old William Alvies of Indianapolis was sentenced to 42 years on Thursday, but the final 20 years of the sentence was suspended. Police said Alvies tried to kill his former girlfriend in a hail of gunfire outside Arsenal Tech High School last June.

Police said the girl was running from Alvies at the time she was shot.

The girl, who had a protective order against Alvies, was shot in the shoulder and was briefly hospitalized.
