Indianapolis man rescued from icy White River

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Officials say a 28-year-old kayaker is out of the hospital after being pulled from the icy White River in Indianapolis.

Emergency crews were called to rescue the man about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. He was about 30-feet from shore. Although bystanders weren’t able to reach the man they helped keep him awake and talking until a fire crew arrived on the scene.

Fire Department Capt. Rita Reith says firefighters threw a rope to the man and pulled him to safety. Reith says the man had been in the water for about 15 minutes and severe hypothermia had set in by the time he was rescued.

He was taken to a hospital in serious condition, but Reith said the kayaker was released and was recovering at home Friday.
