Indianapolis Man Gets 45 Years in 4-month-old’s Death

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A 22-year-old Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for the death of his girlfriend's 4-month-old baby.

Jared Tapley pleaded guilty in October to felony neglect of a dependent. He was accused of causing extensive brain damage and other injuries that led to Nichole Williams' 2013 death.

Court documents state Tapley was babysitting the girl when he called 911 to report she wasn't breathing. Investigators say he didn't explain how the child was injured.

She died two days later at a hospital, and an autopsy revealed the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

The Indianapolis Star reports Tapley admitted in court Wednesday to repeatedly shaking the baby and causing her to hit her head on a wall because he was frustrated she wouldn't stop crying.
