Indianapolis Archdiocese Eliminating Marriage Annulment Fee

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis is eliminating fees for marriage annulments, a step that follows comments by Pope Francis that the church should make it easier for some divorced Catholics to remarry.

Archbishop Joseph Tobin says those seeking to have a previous marriage declared null had been asking to pay $675 to help cover administrative costs. Tobin says some people wrongly believed paying more than the requested fee or paying it all immediately would lead to quicker handling of their cases.

Tobin says he hopes eliminating all fees will help the church to reach out compassionately to those with failed marriages.

The Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic diocese and others around the country also have eliminated such fees. The Indianapolis archdiocese includes some 230,000 Catholics in central and southern Indiana.
