Indiana Woman Found Guilty of Feticide Charge

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – A guilty verdict has been returned against an Indiana woman charged with neglect in the death of a newborn whose body was found in a restaurant trash bin.

A St. Joseph County jury late Tuesday found Purvi Patel guilty of felony neglect and feticide.

The state alleged Patel of Granger took drugs to end her pregnancy in July 2013. She gave birth on July 13, 2013 and failed to provide the child with medical care before he died.

The infant's body was found outside a Mishawaka restaurant in July 2013.

Patel was handcuffed and led away after the verdict. Sentencing for the 33-year-old Patel is scheduled for March 6.

Conviction for neglect of a dependent can result in 20 to 50 years in prison. A feticide conviction can result in a six- to 20-year sentence.
