Indiana State Police Respond to Crash on Toll Road near Bristol

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): Just before 4 yesterday afternoon, Indiana State Troopers responded to a crash on the Indiana Toll Road in Elkhart County near the County Road 17 exit. The crash that happened in the west bound lanes slowed traffic in the area for several hours as police and rescue crews worked at clearing the scene.

Initial reports indicate that the driver of a west bound semi-tractor trailer side swiped another tractor trailer as the driver was attempting to pull to the shoulder. The impact caused the semi-tractor trailer to catch fire and veer off the roadway into the north ditch. Another semi-tractor trailer that was following behind slowed down in an attempt to avoid the wreckage. That driver’s semi-truck was then rear-ended by another vehicle that was pulling a camper. A female passenger in that vehicle had to be extricated by the fire department before being taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Travel was restricted for several hours due to the wreckage, but returned to normal after the lanes were reopened around 7:00 p.m. Travelers on the Toll Road may see minor delays Thursday as remnants of the crash are cleared.
