Indiana Senator Resumes Duties Following Military Deployment

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – An Indiana state senator who spent eight months in Afghanistan as a member of the Navy Reserve has resumed his legislative duties.

Republican Sen. Jim Banks of Columbia City submitted his letter of reinstatement on Friday and says he's eager to get back to work.

Banks returned to Indiana last month. He says he plans to use his recent experience to support fellow veterans who currently serve and those who return to civilian life. Senate President Pro Tem David Long appointed Banks as chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee while he was deployed.

Banks received orders from the Navy to report for active duty before the start of the 2015 legislative session. His wife, Amanda, was chosen to fill the seat until his return.
