INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ State officials have launched an online survey that's part of a push to find ways to meet growing consumer demand for specialty crops like locally grown fruit and nuts.

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture is inviting consumers who shop regularly for specialty crops to take part in the short online survey that officials hope provides insight into the potential for specialty “food hubs'' in Indiana.

Food hubs allow growers and consumers to connect, helping to move locally grown foods more quickly from the farm to the table.

Specialty crops are fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits and horticulture and nursery crops that include flower farming.

The survey is being paid for by grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
