Indiana Prison Sued for Alleged Banning Journal

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A journal that reports on the rights of inmates is suing an Indiana prison for denying its prisoners access to the publication.

The Indianapolis Star reports Prison Legal News claims it has sent at least 90 issues of the journal since February to subscribers at the New Castle Correctional Facility. The journal's lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court in Indianapolis alleges several inmate subscribers at the privately run prison about 45 miles northeast of Indianapolis didn't receive copies because it contains advertisements for pen-pal services to prisoners, in violation of the journal's First and Fourteenth Amendment rights.

Indiana Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison says the agency is reviewing the complaint. A message seeking comment was left for a spokesman for the prison's operator, Boca Raton, Florida-based Geo Group.
