Indiana Preschool Pilot to Begin in Four Counties, Including Allen County

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP) – Four of the five Indiana counties selected for a state-funded preschool pilot program will launch it in early 2015.

WIBC-FM reports Marion, Allen, Lake and Vanderburgh County preschools will begin enrolling low-income children receiving state vouchers in January. Jackson County will follow later in 2015.

Gov. Mike Pence told representatives of the five counties that it's urgent to get the program started. The county representatives held their first face-to-face meeting with Pence and Family and Social Services Administration officials on Wednesday.

The $10 million pilot program, a scaled-down version of one of Pence's top legislative priorities this year, is being funded from FSSA's budget. It's seeking up to $5 million in private funds to expand the program to be delivered by public and private schools and certain child care centers.
