Indiana Officials Join Investigation of Gary Fire

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana environmental regulators are expected to inspect the site of a Gary compost fire burning for several days.

Gary Environmental Affairs Director Brenda Scott Henry says the Indiana Department of Environmental Management has joined the investigation into the fire and will inspect the site Wednesday. She said Tuesday that IDEM inspected the site two or three weeks ago and found no violations then.

The Times reported the fire just east of Gary/Chicago International Airport has been burning for several days.

Gary Fire Chief Teresa Everett released a statement saying the owner of the site indicated the primary content of the burning piles were materials approved for composting.

The name of the owner and other details were unavailable Tuesday because most city offices were closed for Veterans Day.
