INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Democrats and Republicans reviewing the need for new ethics rules are expressing concerns about finding a balance that allows them to continue operating as a part-time legislature.
The House Ethics Committee met last week to review the actions of House Speaker Pro Tem Eric Turner. Turner lobbied in private meetings of the House Republicans against a measure that would have cost him millions of dollars in future profits.
Turner has said he did nothing wrong, and his actions appear not to have violated Indiana's ethics rules. After lawmakers complete their review of Turner, they will work to craft new ethics rules.
House Ethics Committee Chairman Greg Steuerwald (STUR'-walled) said any changes need to preserve lawmakers' abilities to hold outside work and still speak openly on issues that affect them personally.
