Indiana Jobless Rate Steady at 5.7 Percent for May

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana's unemployment rate remained at 5.7 percent in May even though state officials say about 2,000 people returned to the labor force looking for jobs.

Figures released Friday by the state Department of Workforce Development show Indiana's jobless mark was unchanged from April after falling each month for a year when the unemployment rate was 7.9 percent.

Indiana's rate remains below the national mark of 6.3 percent and is lower than all neighboring states except Ohio.

The new report shows about 187,000 people were looking for jobs in Indiana last month. Eastern Indiana's Fayette County has the state's highest jobless rate at 8.0 percent.
