Indiana House to Consider the Future of ISTEP

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The House Education Committee will again take up the Senate bill that would do away with ISTEP and replace it with a test written for students in other states.

The Senate passed the bill to replace ISTEP with an “off the shelf” exam from another state. That was after lawmakers learned the revamped ISTEP that would meet the state‘s new academic standards could cost the state up to 65 million dollars a year.

State Superintendent Glenda Ritz proposed a plan to reduce the price to around 37 million, but the State Board of Education‘s plan discussed last week would appear to cost more.

Though lawmakers controlling the budget and in cost-cutting mode, this bill could also let to yet another round of academic standards if it passes and the governor signs it.
