WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana's top educator is one of four finalists for National Teacher of the Year honors.

The Council of Chief State School Officers in Washington, D.C., announced Wednesday that West Lafayette English teacher Kathy Nimmer was in the running for the top award. Teachers in Texas, Alabama and Hawaii also are finalists.

Nimmer is blind and has taught English at William Henry Harrison High School for 22 years. She was the Tippecanoe School Corp.'s teacher of the year in 2014. She helped carry the Olympic torch before the Summer Games in Atlanta in 1996.

The finalists will be interviewed by a national panel in late February. President Barack Obama will introduce the winner in April.
