Indiana DNR Warns Against “Rescuing” Baby Animals

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is warning Hoosiers not to try and rescue what might seem like abandoned baby animals scampering around Indiana this spring.

A fluffy Thumper look-alike might seem lost, but the Division of Fish and Wildlife says chances are its mother will be back.

Cottontail rabbits and squirrels born in early April often stay at home in their nests while adults search for food.

Moving the babies is illegal and can harm the animals. And even seemingly harmless animals can scratch or bite humans.

The DNR advises leaving them alone to fend for themselves in their natural habitat.

Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator if there's a chance an animal truly is abandoned.
