MAUMEE, Ohio (AP) – Officials say it will cost more $1 million to repair the damage caused when chunks of ice along a northwest Ohio river pushed up into a cemetery and toppled headstones.
Parts of Riverside Cemetery were covered with pieces of ice stacked four feet high after ice jams along the Maumee (maw-MEE') River pushed into low-lying areas earlier this week. Officials estimated that about 90 percent of the headstones, some dating to the mid-1800s, were knocked over.
Maumee Mayor Rich Carr says the city plans to apply for federal emergency funding to offset the cost of repairs.
Carr tells WTOL-TV (http://bit.ly/1CDGFec ) about 50 headstones have been reset, but the weight of some stones has kept city workers from making more progress.
Carr estimates the repairs could take up to a year.
