HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WOWO): A Huntington man reportedly stole more than 6,000 pieces of mail from a post office, and now, he’s going to federal prison.

Byron Fisher, 35, has been sentenced to just over three years in federal prison, along with three years supervised release and restitution, according to the Journal-Gazette.

Fisher broke into an Indianapolis U.S. Post Office in October 2014 and started prying open post office boxes with a crowbar, then taking the contents. Officers that were watching him on camera arrested him at the scene.

Fisher repeatedly targeted this particular post office because he knew there’d be checks and money inside the boxes.

Investigators recovered over 6,000 pieces of mail Fisher stole over the course of 2014. He would take any cash or checks he’d find and convert them into gift cards, more cash, or other items.

Some of the mail contained utility bills that never went paid, and often resulted in disconnections, according to a statement. All of the stolen mail has been recovered.
