Hundreds Gather at Funeral for Ex-US Rep. Jacobs

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Hundreds of people have gathered at the Indiana Statehouse for the funeral of former U.S. Rep. Andy Jacobs, Jr.

Gov. Mike Pence is scheduled to speak during Friday's service in the Statehouse Rotunda along with U.S. Rep. Andre Carson, who holds the Indianapolis seat Jacobs once filled.

Many mourners filed past the flag-draped casket of the Marine veteran of the Korean War after it brought into the Statehouse a couple hours before the service. Jacobs died last week at the age of 81.

He represented Indianapolis in Congress from 1965-73 and again from 1975-97. The Democratic lawmaker had a hand in the crafting the 1965 Voting Rights Act and opposed the Vietnam War.
