Homicide Numbers from 1997 Corrected

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): As the growing number of homicides this year in Fort Wayne surpasses prior years, attention has been given to the year 1997, where there had reportedly been 43 homicides, the highest number in Fort Wayne and Allen County. Now, Allen County Coroner Patt Kite says the correct number is actually 44. The Journal Gazette reports that the number 43 included two people killed from drug overdoses, which were ruled homicides. Now, Kite says that after reviewing information, it was found that the number did not include the death of a third, 85-year-old Kenneth Stahl, who also died at the Courtland Health and Rehabilitation Center, the same nursing home as the other two who died that year. Monday, the coroner ruled the latest shooting death in Fort Wayne a homicide, bringing the total number this year to 39.
