Homeland Security to Conduct Earthquake Simulations

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO): When you think of earthquakes you don't think of them happening in Indiana, but homeland security does.

Indiana officials are participating this week in simulated earthquakes exercises along the New Madrid Fault Line and Wabash Valley Seismic Zone in our region. The New Madrid zone stretches about 150 miles through Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas. Historically, quakes do happen, with some as registering as high as 8.2 on the Richter scale. Those shockwaves are often felt in Indiana and other states.

The multi-state test will help coordinate preparedness across the midwest. Special focus is on developing stronger cooperation between service agencies. They'll also review post-disaster housing and resource delivery.

The exercise includes the Red Cross, INDOT, the National Guard, United Way and others.
