FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The busy holiday shopping season is upon us. As Hoosiers head to the malls and local stores, criminals are on the lookout for easy targets. Being a victim of a crime is no Christmas present. Therefore, the Indiana State Police Department is offering shoppers a few tips to make them less vulnerable to a criminal seeking an easy theft.
Carry small amounts of cash.
Carry keys, credit cards and cash separate from each other.</p>
Wear conservative, comfortable clothing with minimal jewelry.
If you have access to a cell phone, carry it.
While driving, keep your doors locked and windows up.
If you carry a purse, keep it close to your body and always have it zipped.
Park in a well lit area close to where you plan to shop.
Always be aware of your surroundings.
Hold packages firmly and avoid leaving them unattended.
Keep personal belongings and purchased items out of view when left in your vehicle.
Never leave children unattended while shopping.
Leave the stores before closing time; it is safer to leave with other people.
Check the interior of your car before entering.
When returning to your vehicle, carry your keys in your hand and be ready to enter your vehicle immediately.
