Hit and run crash leaves one person in critical condition

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – The Fort Wayne Police Department was dispatched to a crash with injuries at the intersection of West Jefferson Blvd. and Reckeweg Road around 8:50 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses reported a motorcycle and an SUV were involved in the crash, but the SUV fled the scene driving northbound on Reckeweg Road.

When officers arrived on-scene, the driver of the motorcycle was lying in the middle of the intersection.

Paramedics transported the motorcyclist to a local hospital in critical condition.

Police officers located the SUV that fled the scene in the 1700 block of Reckeweg Road.

The driver, Christopher J. Karami of Fort Wayne, was taken into police custody and is facing charges including:

  • One Count: Felony Operating While Intoxicated resulting in serious bodily injury
  • One Count: Felony Leaving the Scene of a serious bodily injury accident
  • One Count: Misdemeanor Operating While Intoxicated Endangerment
  • Three Counts: Felony Neglect of a Dependent

Preliminary reports of the crash indicate the motorcyclist was driving westbound on West Jefferson Blvd. and the SUV was driving eastbound of West Jefferson Blvd., attempting to turn left onto northbound Reckeweg Road.

The driver of the SUV failed to yield the right of way and turned left into the path of the motorcyclist.

The SUV had several people in the car, but no injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
