Health Overhaul May Grow Indiana Addiction Services

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The possibility of thousands of Indiana residents becoming eligible for addiction treatment under the federal health overhaul has state officials and providers preparing for an expansion.

While it remains unclear whether Gov. Mike Pence and federal officials will agree on a Medicaid expansion in Indiana, federal officials estimate one could make more than 38,000 Indiana addicts newly eligible for coverage on Jan. 1.

Providers and state officials are planning for more addicts seeking treatment. A spokeswoman says the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction has met with providers to help them get ready and has arranged training on integrating addiction treatment with primary health care.

President Mark Monson of Indianapolis-based treatment provider Fairbanks says it’s expanding its programming and increasing capacity, in part because of the health care overhaul.
