HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) – A federal prosecutor says the deposed pastor of a northwestern Indiana megachurch has reached a plea deal after being charged with taking a minor across state lines to engage in criminal sexual activity.

U.S. Attorney David Capp said 54-year-old Jack Schaap of Dyer signed a plea agreement in connection with the charge filed Tuesday. Schapp is due to make an initial court appearance Wednesday.

Hammond’s First Baptist Church fired Schaap in July. The Times of Munster reports he told church leaders about an explicit relationship with a girl who was 17 at the time.

First Baptist elected Schaap its pastor in February 2001, a month after his predecessor, the late Rev. Jack Hyles, died of a heart attack. He married Hyles’ youngest daughter, Cindy.

The congregation has 15,000 members.
