Guns, Alcohol and Veterans Dealt with in New Laws

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana residents will be able to keep guns in their cars at school parking lots, drink beer at the state fair and get more support from the state if they're veterans under a raft of new laws taking effect.

The laws that begin Tuesday also include new criminal sentencing guidelines that lawmakers returned this month to correct.

The measures are just a sampling of the work lawmakers did during this year's short legislative session. Tax cuts, preschool vouchers and some of the other big legislation approved this year won't kick in for months.

Republican Senate President Pro Tem David Long says the work lawmakers completed this year is emblematic of how much they pack in each year, despite their status as part-time lawmakers.
