Gun crimes a hot debate both nationally, and locally as Karen Francisco joins Charly Butcher

Karen Francisco is the Editorial Page Editor for the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette and joined Charly Butcher on “Fort Wayne’s Morning News” to talk about what is coming up this week in the paper.  They have an editorial in Friday’s paper about an Indiana legislator’s call for a requirement that the Indiana State Police be advised of all crimes involving guns. He also wants additional funds for probation programs to update communications technology. This is because the man arrested in California the same day as the Orlando shootings (he was equipped with weapons and explosives) was on probation in Indiana and not supposed to have guns. Rep. Ed DeLaney said the system failed completely. Fortunately, it worked in California and it seems that a tragedy was averted.

For Sunday, they have a look at Indiana’s overall standing on the 2016 Kids Count survey. It’s better than last year, but we are ranked 30th among the 50 states, with children’s economic well-being measures dropping. In 2003, Indiana was ranked 20th in the nation for children’s overall well-being. That does not bode well for the state’s future, of course.
