FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): City leaders and Transpoint Intermodal LLC broke ground Tuesday afternoon on a $13.5 million cargo transfer facility on Fort Wayne’s southeast side.

This is Transpoint Intermodal LLC’s first United States hub and it will be located located on 74 acres near Adams Center and Paulding Roads. It’ll be used to load and unload international shipping containers from truck-to-rail or rail-to-truck, according to the city of Fort Wayne.

Once construction is finished, up to 64 people will be hired to work at the facility. The permanent jobs will have an average salary of approximately $50,000 and military veterans will receive job preferences.

“The city of Fort Wayne continues to be a leader in job and business growth with a commitment to enhancing innovative economic development opportunities in our community.” Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry said. “Transpoint’s investment in southeast Fort Wayne is a tremendous win for our city and the region.”

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Transport Intermodal up to $550,000 in conditional tax based credits. The company can’t claim the incentives until Hoosiers are hired.

The company bought the land at a reduced rate of $2,000 an acre from the Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission. On June 14, the Fort Wayne City Council approved the tax abatement for Transpoint.

The construction is expected to be completed by April 2017 with operations starting in May.
