Griffith Police Chief Says Applications More Diverse

GRIFFITH, Ind. (AP) _ Griffith police say recent applications to work for the department include seven times more minority candidates and nearly four times as many women than the previous hiring in 2013.

The (Munster) Times reports that the department had been looking to diversify its ranks. Police Chief Greg Mance says the department received 111 applications, up from 63 applications two years ago. He says it “says a lot about the direction the department has taken in the last couple of years, as well as our recruitment efforts.''

Applicants who pass a physical test on Aug. 1 will take a written exam that afternoon. Interviews for those who advance will be in October.

The hiring list will last two years. Mance hopes to hire two officers early next year.
