Great American Cleanup sweeps through Fort Wayne on Saturday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO):  Thousands of people around the Fort Wayne will lend a helping hand during the Great American Cleanup.

On Saturday, May 21, 270 groups have committed to cleaning up trash and debris along the roadways, trails and green ways across the city.  This year more than 5,000 residents will participate, up from the 4,835 volunteers last year.

In 2015, Fort Wayne volunteers collected 169,280 pounds of trash and debris, while cleaning 68 miles of roads, 33 miles of trails and 22 miles of riverbank.  The city has held the annual cleanup for over two decades.

As part of nationwide cleanup effort, an impressive 14,505 hours were volunteered to clean up the community last year. Afterwards, A wrap-up party with food, drinks, prizes and live entertainment,  for all volunteers will take place at the Headwaters Park West Pavilion.

Some of the organizations that will be part of the local Great American Cleanup (and where they’ll be stationed) include:

* Residents from the Oxford Neighborhood Association – 1421 Oxford Street will have a roll-off container and a garbage truck going through the neighborhood

* BAE Systems staff members – Airport Expressway from Ardmore to Bluffton Road

* North Side High School JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) and National Honor Society students will be cleaning up around their school

* Central Ministries –   Maplecrest Road from East State Boulevard to Lake Avenue  and Coliseum Boulevard  from Lake to the cloverleaf

* Quo Student Travelers – Airport Expressway from Bluffton Road to Lower Huntington Road

* Girl Scouts – Camp Scott Wetlands, 3615 Oxford Street

* Residents from the East Central Neighborhood Association – container located on vacant lot next to American Legion corner of Hanna Street and Lewis Street

* International Business College – West Jefferson from Liberty Mills to Aboite Center Road

* Pro Claim Plus staff members – West Jefferson from Liberty Mills to Homestead Road

* Save Maumee – Riverbank behind Three Rivers Apartments

* Tri-State Watershed Alliance – Riverbank around the Wells Street Bridge

* The Factory – East Washington Boulevard from the cloverleaf to Memorial Park
