INDIANA (WOWO): The American Red Cross and Governor Mike Pence is asking the public for blood donations.

Pence proclaimed Saturday a special “Blood Donation Day” in the Hoosier state and declared this week a “National Blood Donation Week.” Several other governors have also declared the special week in their states.

The governors are doing it in an attempt to raise awareness of the constant need to replenish the blood supply. The Red Cross needs a diverse blood supply because blood from donors of the same ethnic background as the recipient is less likely to cause complications.

The Red Cross is offering a free haircut coupon to everyone who gives blood or platelets during September.

To make an appointment, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit the Red Cross website or call 1-800-733-2767.

The Red Cross asks donors to make appointments and complete the RapidPass online health questionnaire before the appointment to reduce wait times.
