Glenda Ritz helps kick off Fort Wayne Summer Food Service

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): There are many places in Allen County for kids to get a free meal during the summer.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz came to Fort Wayne Monday to kick off the state’s annual summer food service.

The program, which began in 1975, provides nutritious meals to Indiana children during the summer months. Last summer, about 3 million meals were served statewide and more than 70 thousand meals were served each day, Ritz said.

There are more than 70 different sites in Allen County that provide children 18 and under a meal five days a week.

The program has more than 250 sponsors, including local agencies and schools.

“More and more families are working what I consider low-wage jobs – really working. Some of them two jobs and still are not able to put food on the table for their families,” Ritz said.

A list of all the site’s offering food in Allen County is below.
