Gary Takeover School Closed Over Lack of Heat

GARY, Ind. (AP) – The principal of a privately operated Gary turnaround school says she hopes classes can resume Friday after being canceled three days this week because of a lack of heat

Roosevelt College and Career Academy Principal Donna Henry tells the Post-Tribune says some parents are starting to complain about the closings. Thursday was the sixth day of missed classes because of the cold this school year. Classes also were canceled Monday and Tuesday this week.

EdisonLearning Inc. has a four-year contract with the Indiana Department of Education to operate the academically troubled school.

EdisonLearning officials say the Gary Community School Corp. has been slow to act on a balky aging boiler, but a district spokeswoman says an EdisonLearning custodian doesn't know how to operate the boiler system properly.
