Gary Murder Suspect Released from Hospital

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ Gary police are searching for a murder suspect who was released from a Chicago-area hospital earlier this year.

Police weren't informed when 21-year-old Mark Cherry was released from Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois, in late February. The hospital says police usually post guards outside criminal suspects' rooms, but Gary police say no officer was posted because they lack jurisdiction in Illinois.

The Times of Munster reports Cherry is charged with murder and other charges in what is believed to have been a gunbattle over drugs in Gary.

The Lake Station man was wounded in the melee in which 22-year-old Rolando A. Correa of Gary was killed.

Hospital spokesman Mike Maggio says medical privacy laws bar hospitals from disclosing when patients are going to be released.
