Gary Man Surrenders Day after Escape from Officers

GARY, Ind. (AP) — Gary police say a man who injured two officers when he escaped from custody shortly after being sentenced to a year in jail has surrendered to authorities.

Cpl. Gabrielle King says 21-year-old Jamal Haskins of Gary turned himself in Saturday morning at the city's Public Safety Facility. She tells The Times Haskins likely will face additional charges, including battery on law enforcement and escape.

Police say Haskins kicked one officer and shoved the other down onto the concrete, injuring both officers, Friday as he was being moved to a van to bring him to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point.

Haskins had just been sentenced one year in jail for failing to comply with a program that allows mentally ill defendants to avoid prosecution by receiving treatment.
