Gary Man Dies After Being Struck by Coal Train

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) _ A 26-year-old man was killed when he was struck a train delivering coal to a generating station in northwestern Indiana.

Authorities say investigators are trying to determine why 26-year-old Randall Williams of Gary was on the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. property in Michigan City. Northwestern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Transit police chief Bob Byrd says it is possible Williams hopped the train in Gary.

The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune of Merrillville report Williams was found dead on the tracks Sunday morning after a South Shore freight train delivered the coal.

Byrd says transit police are assisting Michigan City police and NIPSCO in the investigation.
