Garrett to Make $3M in Repairs to Crumbling City Hall

GARRETT, Ind. (AP) – The small northeast Indiana city of Garrett is set to make $3 million in repairs to its 102-year-old City Hall, where pieces of the building have fallen off.

Mayor Tonya Hoeffel says officials noticed problems with City Hall late last year, when a large piece of mortar came off the building. The main entrance was closed because of the falling mortar.

The Garrett City Council voted to approve the repairs Tuesday night, with the exception of council member Brenda Wigginton. She said she'd rather build a new City Hall than restore the existing one.

Work on the building includes roof and window replacement, masonry restoration and basement wall repairs. Officials don't know how long the work will take, but Hoeffel says she hopes City Hall can stay open during the restoration.
