Gambling Fight Set to Test Governor’s Power

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Republican Governor Mike Pence is set to face a key test of his influence inside the Statehouse with the upcoming fight over expanded gambling.

The state's ailing gambling industry is again seeking to move casinos on land and add live table games at the state's racinos. The recession and competition across state lines have hobbled the once powerful industry.

Republican lawmakers are hearing them out as they prepare for the 2015 legislative session. Pence has long been clear about his opposition to expanded gambling. That position could put him at odds with top Republican lawmakers this session.

Ed Feigenbaum of Indiana Gaming Insight says lawmakers would like a clear answer from Pence on gaming. He adds they could decide to expand gambling anyway and risk a veto from him.
