FWFD to Honor Crime Victims during Candlelight Vigil

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): April 6 – 12, 2014, marks National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and communities all across the nation will rally to honor and support victims of crime.

Here in Allen County, the Victim Assistance Program of the Fort Wayne Police Department will host their annual candlelight vigil to also recognize victims and survivors of violent crimes.

The theme this year, “30 Years: Restoring the Balance of Justice,” emphasizes the importance of providing unified, compassionate support and assistance to every victim.

Officials with the Victim Assistance Program released the following statement about the vigil:

The Candlelight Vigil is one way to bring honor to all crime victims by promoting a greater understanding of crime victims’ needs and the critical importance of working together to help all victims of crime rebuild their lives.  Crime victim services include information regarding their rights, their involvement in and support throughout the justice process as more than a witness; and rights to information about compensation programs and supportive services that can help them cope with the aftermath of crime.

The following is Victim Assistance’s schedule for 2014:

Candlelight Vigil: Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. Allen County Courthouse

Victim Assistance 5K Run/Walk and Kid’s Fun Run: Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Headwaters Park. Check-in 8:30 a.m., the Ceremony begins at 9:15 a.m., and the run starts at 9:30 a.m.
