FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Property taxes would go up under the next proposed budget for Fort Wayne Community Schools.

The 2019 spending plan sits at $305.9-million, and that’s with an anticipated tax rate increase of 3%. The Journal Gazette reports that would mean about $8 more per year for the owner of a $100,000 home.

The new spending plan is 4% bigger than last year’s, with $203.7-million earmarked for the district’s education fund, and the rest going toward operating costs and day-to-day expenses.

District Chief Financial Officer Kathy Friend says state funding per pupil has only gone up about 1% since 2014.

A public hearing on the budget is set for October 8th at 6pm in the Grile Administrative Center at 1200 South Clinton Street.

I believe this increase is needed to give a much needed raise for the 100+ non-teacher Community School employees who only make over $100,000 annually. They’re drastically underpaid. It’s about time!
