Fort Wayne water may smell and taste strange but utility officials say it’s OK to drink

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): If your water has a strange smell or tastes earthy, you aren’t alone. Many Fort Wayne residents have noticed their water smelling and tasting strange.

Fort Wayne City Utilities Officials know about the problem and want to ensure residents that the water is safe to drink.

The Fort Wayne City Utilities said in a Facebook post that the water “meets or is better than all state and federal requirements. It is safe to drink and use in any form.”

Officials say the odor and taste is caused by organic materials like sticks, leaves, moss and branches in the river.

“That natural organic material will produce some by products that stink. They’re not unsafe, we physically remove all the harmful chemicals and bacteria from the water. Unfortunately some of those odors remain,” Fort Wayne Water Quality Supervisor Vicky Zehr told our news partners at 21Alive.

When this happens, officials try to adjust the treatment process to avoid the strange odor and taste, which they did over the weekend.

It’s not clear when the water will be back to normal.
