Fort Wayne Utilities Dept. Finds Grease in Sewer Drains

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO):  When it's time to clean up from this year's Thanksgiving dinner, city officials would like to remind you to properly dispose of the grease.

According to WISH-TV, city leaders say they're looking at increasing problems with clogged pipes and sewer drains due to the increased popularity of turkey fryers.

Crews removed large globs of grease in the city's drainage system that were blocking pipes and causing backups. WISH-TV reports one of those globs was 28 inches wide.

Fort Wayne City Utilities examined nearly 300,000 feet of sewer pipes.

Officials suggest pouring cooled oil into sealed containers that can later be thrown away. Another environmentally friendly idea is to add kitty litter, sand, or sawdust to the container before throwing the grease in the trash. That way, the dry material will soak up the grease and make it easier to dispose.
