Fort Wayne region ranks poorly in wage growth

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The past ten years haven’t seen much wage growth for the Fort Wayne metro area.

According to new statistics from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Fort Wayne region ranked 371st out of 380 in wage growth from 2005 to 2015. The Kokomo area ranked dead last.

Ellen Cutter, director of the Community Research Institute at IPFW, tells the Journal Gazette the lack of wage increases could be tied to unemployment: when more people are out of work, employers don’t typically need to raise wages to fill slots, but when there are fewer openings offered wages tend to go up as employers try to woo better prospects.

Cutter adds that these figures, while only released recently, are based on payroll numbers that are nine months old.
