FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Governor Eric Holcomb has announced that the state will offer free handheld metal detectors for any school that wants them.

Holcomb made the announcement yesterday, saying one free device will be provided for every 250 students, whether it’s a public, charter, or accredited private school.

School officials in Fort Wayne, however, aren’t sure if they’ll take him up on the offer, with representatives from Fort Wayne Community Schools, Northwest Allen County Schools, and Southwest Allen County Schools all telling the News-Sentinel they’re not making any commitments yet, but will all look into the program.

The detectors will be sent out by the middle of August.
