FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The City of Fort Wayne announced an additional fine and outlined steps Red River Waste Solutions is taking to improve trash collection service.

Red River was fined $92,800 in June. This joins a $15,000 fine in April and $63,950 fine in May. July fines have not yet been announced.

However, city officials say they won’t pursue a declaration of material default against Red River at this time.

City officials and Red River are taking the following steps to improve trash collection for residents:

  • Red River has brought in additional drivers to cover collection routes
  • Red River has a full-time recruiter in Fort Wayne to attract and retain drivers
  • Red River is partnering with Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast and Northeast Indiana Works to grow the candidate pool of potential employees through recruitment and training efforts
  • The City and Red River are exploring using CDL-trained drivers employed by the City to assist on an as-needed basis at Red River’s expense
  • Red River is exploring partnering with area vendors to assist with collection efforts until the company is fully staffed

“We expect more and are demanding more from Red River,” said Mayor Henry. “We’re focused on and committed to ensuring Red River provides the best and most reliable services possible. I understand the frustration that many people are feeling right now. Meeting the basic needs of our residents and neighborhoods is critical to Fort Wayne’s success. We’re going to make this right. By working together, we can make a meaningful difference and restore the public’s trust in the garbage and recycling process in our City.”

The garbage collection issue of Fort Wayne should be a big deal. I am paying more now for a less than satisfactory service. The old service would close the lids on the refuse containers. the new service employees say they will not close my lids. So where does the water go when the trash cans have water in them from rain and snow? Just pour the contaminated water on the street or alley? Mayor Tom, this does not look good for your resume. Basic services are getting worse under your leadership.
