Formal Charges Filed Against Woman In Neglect Case

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) – Formal charges have been filed against a woman charged with her husband with the neglect of a 15-year-old granddaughter found weighing less than 40 pounds.

A magistrate appointed a public defender for the 54-year-old Anderson woman during her initial court appearance Monday on 11 felony charges including neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury and criminal confinement.

Her 58-year-old husband was formally charged Friday. Both are held on $100,000 cash bonds. The Associated Press isn't identifying them to protect the girl's identity.

Anderson Police Department spokesman Joel Sandefur says the girl is in critical condition at an Indianapolis hospital.

The Herald Bulletin reports a probable cause affidavit states the couple was collecting $720 in Social Security for the girl and refused to provide her with medical care.
