NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) — A southern Indiana county that shares a landfill with its neighbor wants out of the deal.

Officials in Floyd County say they’ll give up the county’s interest in the Clark-Floyd landfill if Clark County officials will agree Floyd County has no legal responsibility for the landfill.

But The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky., reports that’s one deal Clark County doesn’t think it can make.

Commissioner John Perkins says Clark County can’t let Floyd County out of helping pay to fix any future environmental issues.

The landfill in the midst of an expansion and $9 million is needed to finish it.

Costs climbed after environmental regulators demanded an underground barrier wall be extended.

The landfill received about 215,000 tons of trash in 2012.
